EUCases – “Linking Legal Open Data in Europe” is a research project of the European Union. The aim of the project is to develop a research platform that lawyers can use throughout Europe to find laws and judgments that relate to a specific issue. This is particularly relevant in the area of European case law, because national decisions there often have a direct impact on other member states. The system is based on public databases of the EU member countries, in which all laws and judgments are available. Using the methods of computational linguistics and legal informatics, procedures are developed in the project to map the content of these documents to a standardized ontology. In this way, the relationships between the documents can be recognized and relevant documents for a search query can be determined.
