Averbis enables fast and precise searches in clinical reports

Freiburg i. Breisgau – 5 June 2012. Imagine a clinic wanted to carry out a clinical study or doctors wanted to search for specific cases in large collections of report. This has always involved an extremely complicated and time-consuming search query. But with the research toll from Averbis GmbH, doctors were to soon have the possibility of searching through all free text documents in their clinic for diagnoses, particular findings, age, sex and further characteristics in no time.

Whether it was undesired side effects of medications or the question of whether the cancer risk increases in children following computer tomographies: thorough identification of relevant patient groups is of great importance in scientific issues. But even in the age of multi-media, most of the necessary information is only still available as texts. Thousands and thousands of theses unstructured texts are produced in clinics every day in the form of doctors’ reports and pathological and radiological reports. Until now, researchers could only dream of quick and specific access to the information and knowledge contained in these documents.

This is about to change. Averbis GmbH is working together with the University of Graz on a research tool that allows for searches in all free text documents throughout all departments of a clinic. “With the semantic search from Averbis, doctors will be able to search through the data inventories of thier clinic effortlessly, precisely and entirely for diagnoses, particular findings, age, sex and further criteria“ explains the Managing Director of Averbis GmbH, Dr. Med. Philipp Daumke. Thus, patient groups can be selected with very high accuracy using certain characteristics that are stored in data bases in unstructured form.

Averbis GmbH has already proven its excellent expertise in semantic searches several times, among other things with its product RadMiner, which gives radiologist quick access to their clinics’ texts und image inventories. “With this product, we were able to demonstrate that the thoroughness of the hits is increased significantly with a semantic search”, explains Daumke.

Until now, before the start of a clinical study, complicated search inquiries had to be devised in which various synonyms and word parts had to be considered, as the terminology doctors use in their routine documents is by far not unitary. If a term variation wasn’t observed, many documents remained unrecognized. ‘With the Averbis technology, which recognizes the meaning of the single term, it doesn’t matter if it says Carcinom, Ca. Cancer or malignant tumor’ says Prof. Stefan Schulz from the Medical University of Graz. He is convinced that aside from the time savings, the quality of the search results will improve significantly.

The Averbis technology is an important foundation, not only for clinical research, but also for other application scenarios. The text analysis solution is helpful everywhere where clinics need to search effectively and specifically, among other things in the recruiting of patients for clinical studies, automatic billing, quality control, as well as in the communication between service renderers in the Health Sector.
